Roger Rote

This is the last room from a retrospective exhibition of the fictional artist Roger Rote. The exhibition is about a man who read the 1944 short story Waiting for Him (a story based in the middle of Bosch's haywain triptych) after the suicide of his close friend. In desperation, he becomes extremely concerned with living existentially and authentically. In his concern for following the ‘correct’ way to live, he becomes deeply troubled and excludes himself, resulting in him neglecting the one major component of existential living acknowledging his complete freedom. Like how we are ‘thrown’ (Heidegger) into a confusing world, we are thrown into an exhibition that presumes prior context, alienating the viewer.
